During my childhood, my brothers and I played with G.I. Joe action figures. These toys battled and rode in military vehicles. We sometimes put them in Barbie’s pink Corvette, despite their inability to reach the pedals.
These action figures were satisfying to manipulate, allowing us to create stories by controlling their actions. As they were lifeless objects, they had no input, quietly accepting whatever role we assigned them.
Similarly, many people desire to treat politicians and former leaders like manipulable action figures. Michelle and Barack Obama, among others, often face this expectation. On the liberal side, part of this stems from a lack of interesting, progressive candidates who differ from the Democrat’s historical pattern of white, heterosexual, often wealthy men.
For over a decade, the public has frequently called for Mrs. Obama to run for president. Despite her clear disinterest, some persist in fantasizing about her potential presidency, treating her consent as secondary. Last year, in a discussion with actor Tracee Ellis Ross, Mrs. Obama dismissed these calls, saying, “Don’t even look at me about running ’cause you all are lying. You’re not ready for a woman.” She has consistently expressed her lack of interest in running.
It’s important to note that Mrs. Obama has never held elected office. While this does not disqualify her, considering the current president’s background, it does raise concerns about experience. We have witnessed the effects of inexperience in leadership. Although Mrs. Obama succeeded as First Lady and would likely be an effective president, there is a need for leaders who possess both the experience and willingness to take on such roles.
Former President Barack Obama also frequently receives requests to step in against the Trump administration or even seek a third term. Trump supporters like Alan Dershowitz and Miriam Adelson similarly suggest extending Mr. Trump’s time in office.
