Olivia Newton-John faced a heavy burden due to the mysterious disappearance of her ex-boyfriend, Patrick McDermott, during a 2005 fishing trip off the California coast. McDermott’s fate remained unknown, casting a shadow over Newton-John’s life. This enduring mystery is explored in Matthew Hild’s biography of the star, “A Little More Love.” Newton-John, loved for her role in “Grease,” passed away in 2022 at 73 after battling breast cancer.

McDermott vanished during an overnight fishing trip from Los Angeles on June 30, 2005. His family grew concerned when he missed an event and did not pick up his son as planned. He left belongings on the vessel and his car was found parked at the marina. Opinions varied on whether McDermott reached shore or succumbed to the sea, with some believing he staged his own disappearance.

Hild revealed that speculation and reports suggested McDermott might be alive in Mexico, living under an assumed identity to escape financial woes. Despite theories, Newton-John doubted these claims, maintaining he likely drowned. She engaged Gavin de Becker, a personal security expert, who failed to find evidence of McDermott’s existence.

Newton-John struggled publicly with the ongoing uncertainty surrounding McDermott’s disappearance. In 2005, she expressed hope that McDermott was safe and urged those with information to come forward. Her connection with his family remained strong, revealing to Larry King her friendship with McDermott’s ex-wife and support for his son.

The U.S. Coast Guard’s investigation in 2009 yielded no evidence of foul play, suicide, accident, or hoax, suggesting McDermott was lost at sea. Newton-John acknowledged in interviews that the case brought persistent trauma, affecting her and McDermott’s family.

Despite the tragic chapter in her life, Newton-John continued to encourage wellness and cancer research. Her resilience carried her through, although the unresolved disappearance stayed with her for years.

In 2008, Newton-John remarried John Easterling, finding happiness until her death. She remained cherished for her spirit and connection to generations of fans.
