Democrats and media figures are facing backlash for their response to Tulsi Gabbard’s resignation as Director of National Intelligence. Her decision followed her husband’s cancer diagnosis. Tony Kinnett from The Daily Signal criticized the swift negative commentary.
“The social media ecosystem, a lot of the analysis and punditry sphere, focuses on saying the spiciest thing as soon as the news breaks,” Kinnett mentioned on “Fox & Friends Weekend.” He argues that these reactions reveal the character of political commentators.
Gabbard will leave her role on June 30. In her resignation letter, she expressed gratitude for her position but cited her husband Abraham’s rare bone cancer as the reason for stepping down. Fox News Digital secured this letter.
Some media and Democratic Party members criticized Gabbard’s decision. On CNN, critics commented on her role. Former Deputy DNI Beth Sanner offered condolences but also made a critical remark about her term.
Democratic lawmakers also expressed opinions. Sen. Adam Schiff shared on social media that resignation was her only positive contribution to national security. “While the circumstances are deserving of sympathy, let’s be clear: Tulsi Gabbard’s only positive contribution is her resignation,” he stated.
Kinnett noted that turning to politics in such a personal issue highlights shifts in political commentary. “The most principled action as a spouse is to prioritize family over career,” Kinnett said, addressing the critical public reactions.
Gabbard, a U.S. Army Reserve officer and combat veteran, began her role in February 2025. She was a Democratic Congress member before switching to independent and later joining the Republican Party. In her resignation letter, Gabbard emphasized her husband’s support throughout their marriage and military deployments, expressing her inability to continue in her demanding role without his support.
Former President Trump commented on Truth Social, supporting Gabbard’s decision to stand by her husband. He expressed confidence in her husband’s recovery and praised Gabbard’s work.
