Shots were fired close to the northwestern side of the White House complex while President Trump was present inside. This incident led the Secret Service to return fire, resulting in the death of the shooter. The events unfolded Saturday evening when a gunman approached the White House area, extracted a firearm from a bag, and initiated the attack. Secret Service officers responded promptly and fatally shot the attacker.
A nearby civilian was caught in the crossfire and hit, as confirmed by Secret Service representatives. However, the extent of the injuries was not disclosed, and no officers sustained wounds during the event.
President Trump, who was in the White House at the time, expressed gratitude towards the Secret Service and law enforcement for their prompt reaction. He characterized the shooter as having a ‘violent history’ and a ‘potential obsession’ with the White House.
Who is the shooter?
The offender identified in the investigation is Nasire Best, aged 21. After being shot by authorities, he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead. Mr. Best’s history with the Secret Service includes an arrest from last July when he trespassed into a restricted zone of the White House and ignored cautionary signs and verbal commands to cease his actions.
An affidavit presented in D.C. Superior Court showed he was recognized by Secret Service staff ‘for walking around the White House complex, enquiring how to gain access at various entry points.’ In a separate prior incident, Mr. Best was compulsorily detained for obstructing a vehicle entrance on the east side of the White House. At the time of this arrest, made on misdemeanor charges of unlawful entry, he did not have any pending warrants. During the scene of the arrest, he claimed to officers that ‘he was Jesus Christ and wanted to be apprehended.’
