The traditionalist Catholic Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) and the Vatican seem poised for a significant conflict over SSPX’s intention to ordain bishops without papal consent. The SSPX has announced it will proceed with the consecrations on July 1, despite the Vatican’s warning that such an act would be considered ‘schismatic’ and lead to automatic excommunication under Church law.
Importance of the Dispute
In the Catholic Church, the pope typically appoints or approves bishops. Ordaining bishops without this approval is regarded as a grave violation of church authority, triggering automatic excommunication. The current tension echoes longstanding disagreements. Founded in 1970 in opposition to the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, the SSPX fractured its relationship with Rome in 1988 when its founder, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, consecrated bishops without papal authorization.
SSPX’s Intentions
SSPX Superior General Father Davide Pagliarani recently urged members to address the situation with ‘prudence, charity, love, and humility,’ emphasizing non-confrontational intentions. Pagliarani expressed the need for good faith discussions with the Vatican and discouraged bitterness towards church authorities, even if sanctions arise.
If we must deploy all our efforts to defend the consecrations—and the society already has an entire ‘arsenal’ for this purpose," he noted, "we must not exhibit contempt or frustration in our explanations, particularly towards the Catholic Church’s hierarchy.
Pagliarani stressed that if the SSPX were to be excommunicated and labeled schismatic, it would be a regrettable, unjust outcome. However, the SSPX believes the consecrations are crucial for maintaining its ministry and leadership, citing a ‘grave necessity’ within the church.
Vatican’s Stance
The Vatican has firmly rejected the SSPX’s rationale. Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, head of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, stated that the ordinations would break Communion with the church as they lack papal mandate.
The Holy Father continues in his prayers to ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten those responsible for the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X so they may reconsider this extremely grave decision," read the statement.
Future Implications
The scheduled July 1 consecrations are set to test relations between Rome and the SSPX further. This could become the most tumultuous period between the two parties in decades.
