The New York Knicks secured a decisive victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, winning 130-93 and completing a four-game sweep in the Eastern Conference finals. This victory marks the Knicks’ first advancement to the NBA Finals since 1999.
Karl Anthony-Towns delivered a strong performance with 19 points and 14 rebounds. OG Anunoby contributed 17 points, while Landry Shamet scored 16 off the bench. Both Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson added 15 points each for the Knicks. This win extended the Knicks’ playoff winning streak to 11 games. The last team to achieve such a streak was the Golden State Warriors, who had a 15-game run in 2017.
With a commanding lead, the Knicks’ starters were pulled from the game with 7:47 remaining. Knicks fans celebrated, and celebrity supporters including director Spike Lee, comedian Tracy Morgan, and actor Timothée Chalamet with Kylie Jenner were present to witness the triumph.
The Knicks will face either the Oklahoma City Thunder or the San Antonio Spurs in the Finals. The Western Conference finals are currently tied at two games each, with Game 5 scheduled in Oklahoma City. The Thunder or Spurs will have home-court advantage in the Finals due to a better regular-season record. The series will start on June 3.
This marks the Knicks’ third finals appearance since their last championship win in 1973. They previously lost to Houston in 1994 and to San Antonio in 1999. Since the NBA-ABA merger in 1976, this is the 15th instance of a coach reaching the finals in their first year with a team. The Knicks hired coach Mike Brown after parting ways with Tom Thibodeau. Brown led the team to the finals in his initial year, having previously coached Cleveland to the finals in 2007.
Donovan Mitchell scored 31 points for Cleveland. The Cavaliers faced their first postseason series sweep since the 2018 NBA Finals against Golden State.
Cleveland initially led 8-2, with Mitchell scoring the Cavaliers’ first eight points. However, the Knicks took control as the game progressed. A dunk by Evan Mobley briefly gave Cleveland a 17-14 advantage before the Knicks responded, taking a substantial lead with a 20-0 run.
By halftime, the Knicks led 68-49, being up by as much as 29 points in the first half. Four Knicks players, including Towns, who had 10 points and 10 rebounds, recorded double figures before the half.
The Knicks widened their lead to 45 points in the fourth quarter, sealing a comprehensive win over the Cavaliers.
