After many years in Hollywood, Gary Sinise decided to leave. In an interview with Fox News Digital, the Golden Globe-winning actor discussed why he moved away. His foundation had recently gifted a car to an injured Army veteran with help from Wells Fargo. This occurred at America’s Ball for The Mall event earlier in the month.
Sinise explained, “When I stepped away from acting in 2019, I had made some money. I also had investments going.” His son, Mac, was diagnosed with a rare cancer in 2018 and passed away in 2024. Sinise shared that he became his son’s ‘battle buddy’, supporting him during the fight. He said his wife faced challenges, and his father suffered a stroke, passing in 2021. His mother was aging, requiring his presence.

He started considering his future if he didn’t return to work in Hollywood. Sinise mentioned the high costs of living in California, including property taxes and gas prices. “The house we had was great for our family because it was large,” he noted. However, as their circumstances changed, it was no longer needed.
Known for his role as Lt. Dan in “Forrest Gump,” Sinise and his family chose Nashville, TN, after considering their lifestyle options. “I started focusing on what life here was like,” the 71-year-old actor stated. He compared gas prices, noting, “There’s a gas station with gas for $2.59 a gallon. In California, gas was $5.79, so it’s $3 more a gallon there. I don’t understand it.”
Sinise expressed satisfaction with Tennessee’s lower living costs, particularly no state tax, allowing him to save more money. He added, “I’d instead leave more money to my kids later on than spend it all in California on taxes.”

While open to future acting roles if a suitable project arises, Sinise stands by his decision to step back. “I stepped away to focus on family, and I don’t regret it,” he stated. “Passing up good opportunities is one thing, but missing chances to help family during difficult times is another,” he emphasized.
Sinise dedicated his career to supporting those who served the country. He founded the Gary Sinise Foundation in 2011. “Once folks join our program, they’re part of our family,” Sinise said. The foundation continues to offer support whenever needed.
Additionally, Sinise remains committed to preserving his son’s legacy through music. His late son, Mac, left a collection of music, which Sinise works on sharing. “It’s emotional because I miss him so much,” Sinise shared about his son’s third posthumous album, “Resurrection and Revival: Part 3.” Proceeds from the album will support the Gary Sinise Foundation, as Mac wished to aid military personnel and first responders.
