Body camera footage revealed the intense rescue of a baby from a vehicle trapped in rising floodwaters in Beeville, Texas. The incident took place about 100 miles southeast of San Antonio during heavy storms that quickly transformed roads into hazardous zones.
The Beeville Police Department detailed how a sudden downpour overpowered a low-water crossing, ensnaring a vehicle as it attempted to navigate the area. In a Facebook post, the police explained, “officers and firefighters responded after a vehicle drove into a flooded creek crossing and began getting pushed by the rushing water.”
Officials highlighted that the conditions worsened rapidly, giving no opportunity to set up barricades before the vehicle reached the crossing. A fire chief present tried to signal the driver, who unfortunately missed the warning.
Footage captured the vehicle becoming stuck as rising waters reached the top of its wheels. An officer on the scene noted in the video that the surging water was propelling the car toward a nearby creek.
As the emergency crews evaluated the situation, the driver shouted to an officer that a baby was inside the vehicle. The officer quickly sprang into action, braving the floodwaters to open the car door and extract the infant’s carriage safely.
After securing the baby, another responder swiftly used a jacket to protect the child from the relentless rain. Fortunately, authorities reported that both the baby and the driver were unharmed in the episode.
The police used the video footage to emphasize the dangers of floodwaters. “What may look passable one minute can quickly become dangerous the next,” they warned.
They also stressed the importance of obeying road barricades. “It does not take much moving water to push a vehicle off the roadway, and by the time you realize how dangerous it is, it can already be too late,” the department cautioned. “Going around barricades not only puts lives at risk but is also a criminal offense.”
Drivers are advised to reduce speed during heavy rain and steer clear of flooded areas, particularly low-lying roadways and creek crossings. The police concluded, “No errand, shortcut, or destination is worth risking your life or your family’s safety.”
