In an unexpectedly early exit, Jannik Sinner’s quest for a career Grand Slam ended at the French Open during the second round. Despite entering the match with 30 consecutive victories, Sinner lost to Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, ranked 56th globally. The match score was 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1, with Sinner struggling under extreme heat conditions.
Although Sinner was close to victory, leading 5-2 in the third set, he failed to capitalize, losing 18 consecutive points. The persistent heat, reaching around 90 degrees with no protection on Court Philippe-Chatrier, significantly impacted his performance.
Sinner took a 10-minute break to regain composure, but his energy did not return.
Sinner’s issues with heat were evident from previous tournaments. He faced challenges at the Australian Open and suffered cramps at the Shanghai Masters. Unlike other tournaments with aid during severe heat, such as closing the roof at the Australian Open, Paris offered no relief.
During the match, Cerúndolo maintained his composure and focus, saving critical break points and forcing extra shots from Sinner. This strategy weakened Sinner’s resolve, as Cerúndolo capitalized on Sinner’s physical decline.
In the fifth set, Cerúndolo quickly advanced with a 4-0 lead, showcasing Sinner’s inability to sustain his usual power and agility. The match concluded with Cerúndolo defeating Sinner, resulting in an unexpected victory for the Argentine player.
With Carlos Alcaraz out of the tournament, the 2026 French Open became one of the most unpredictable men’s draws in recent years. Sinner, having learned from consecutive disappointing French Open finishes, faces a significant challenge in managing heat-related difficulties as he continues his tennis career.
Cerúndolo, thrilled with his major career victory, will next meet either Martin Landaluce from Spain or Vít Kopřiva of Czechia in the tournament’s third round.
