Exploring the Legacy of ‘Wishbone’ with a New Documentary

4 weeks ago 0

The 1990s featured many beloved television pets, but none may be as cherished as Soccer, the canine star of the PBS series “Wishbone.” Throughout 50 episodes and the concluding film “Wishbone’s Dog Days of the West,” the show delighted both children and adults. It combined playful antics with earnest retellings of classics like “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” “Robin Hood,” and “The Phantom of the Opera.”

Now, the creators have returned with a documentary titled “What’s the Story, Wishbone?” This film explores the show’s rise and unexpected end, crafted by those who were there from the beginning. While new “Wishbone” stories may be on the horizon, this documentary offers ample content for existing fans.

The documentary includes insights from Joey Stewart, the director, and Stephanie Simpson, a BAFTA-winning writer. Notably, Betty A. Buckley, producer of the original series and the documentary, discussed her experiences on the set of “Wishbone.” She emphasized the importance of respecting the youthful audience and treating them as deserving of high-quality storytelling. This approach has helped maintain “Wishbone”‘s cultural influence even years after it first aired on PBS.

Buckley shared many memorable stories from the classic “Wishbone” era and detailed the process behind the documentary’s creation. According to her, many childhood shows fade over time, but “Wishbone” still resonates with audiences, maintaining its charm and appeal.

“What’s the Story, Wishbone?” is currently available on Public Television Stations and will be accessible on digital platforms beginning June 10.
