Nicolas Cage Reflects on Career Choices for Family and Artistic Fulfillment

3 weeks ago 0

Nicolas Cage has revealed his reasons for turning down roles in major film franchises, opting instead for projects that aligned with his personal goals. In an interview with Complex News, the 62-year-old actor shared his thought process behind choosing certain roles over bigger franchise opportunities.

Cage’s Career Decisions

Cage declined offers to appear in two prominent franchises. He chose to take on roles that he found more personally engaging at the time. He mentioned two specific instances: turning down ‘Dumb and Dumber’ to work on ‘Leaving Las Vegas,’ and rejecting the role of the Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man’ in favor of ‘Adaptation.’

“One was when Jim Carrey wanted me to do ‘Dumb and Dumber,’ and I said I’d rather do ‘Leaving Las Vegas,’ and the other was ‘Spider-Man’ as the Green Goblin, and I said I’d rather do ‘Adaptation.’ Both those choices gave me more to do as an actor,” Cage commented.

Jeff Daniels eventually played Harry Dunne in ‘Dumb and Dumber’ and its sequel. Willem Dafoe took on the role of the Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man’ and reprised the character in its subsequent films.

Award-Winning Roles

Choosing ‘Leaving Las Vegas’ proved rewarding for Cage, as he won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for his portrayal of an alcoholic screenwriter named Ben. His role in ‘Adaptation,’ where he played twin brothers Charlie and Donald, earned him more accolades.

Regarding ‘Adaptation,’ Cage admitted, “To play twins in a movie was a big challenge… It was a lot.”

Family First Attitude

Cage has consistently prioritized his family over his career, even if it meant turning down roles in blockbuster franchises like ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Matrix.’ He explained to People magazine his decision to stay closer to home due to his family obligations.

“First and foremost… there’s no version of Nick Cage in reality that doesn’t want to spend time with his children… I turned down ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Matrix’ because I didn’t want to go to New Zealand or Australia for extended periods,” Cage said, emphasizing the importance of family time.

Today, Cage has three children: Weston, 35, with Christina Fulton; Kal-El, 20, with Alice Kim; and August Francesca, 3, with his current wife, Riko Shibata.

On Upcoming Projects

Cage’s decision to play roles with personal significance continues. While working on the 2024 film ‘The Surfer,’ Cage shared with Entertainment Weekly the difficulties he faced training for his role.

“I got pounded to smithereens while practicing my surfing skills… I could have died… Now I have a young kid, I don’t know if I want to do it anymore,” he candidly shared about his experience.
