Graham Platner’s Senate campaign is facing intense scrutiny after his wife, Amy Gertner, addressed allegations against him. Critics on social media have labeled her video defense as damage control that fails to counter the claims against the Maine Democrat.

In her statement, Gertner expressed frustration with media outlets and individuals for spreading rumors instead of focusing on key campaign issues, such as healthcare and education. Her comments followed a Wall Street Journal report alleging Platner exchanged inappropriate text messages with multiple women post-marriage.

Gertner acknowledged the challenges faced by their new marriage, compounded by infertility struggles and the demands of a Senate campaign. However, critics were quick to note that Platner himself did not publicly address the allegations, relying instead on his wife’s statement.

A particularly damning comment came from Samantha Cantrell, press secretary for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, who criticized Platner for having his wife, whom she described as a victim, defend him.

“It looks and sounds like a hostage video,” one user bluntly responded.

Some critics went further, questioning Gertner’s defense of Platner amid negative campaign tactics targeting Collins. Former Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell, among others, argued that Platner’s campaign should be prepared for similar criticism.
