Marist political commentator and Twitch streamer Hasan Piker voiced strong opinions during a livestream on Sunday. He criticized New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat, for her handling of anti-ICE protests outside a Newark detention center. Piker accused the governor of inadvertently supporting the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
Piker’s comments followed Sherrill’s defense of deploying state police around demonstrations at Delaney Hall, an ICE detention center in Newark. She emphasized that she would not allow protests to act as a pretext for increased federal immigration operations in the state.
“I refuse to let that happen in New Jersey. I will not give ICE a pretext,” Sherrill stated during a news segment.
Piker mocked this stance, suggesting that Sherrill was effectively doing ICE’s job by her actions.
“Yeah, I won’t give ICE a pretext. So I’m going to ensure that they don’t have to do anything because I’m going to do it myself,” he said.
Piker expanded his critique to the broader Democratic Party, implying that centrists like Sherrill enable aggressive immigration enforcement policies.
Anti-ICE demonstrations at Delaney Hall have highlighted alleged poor conditions faced by detainees, including insufficient food. The Department of Homeland Security disputes these claims.
Piker accused Sherrill of facilitating Trump’s immigration agenda: “The real story is the horrifying conditions inside of this facility … and the governor acting as though she’s powerless to stop it.”
He criticized the presence of state troopers in anti-riot gear, suggesting they were collaborating with federal efforts.
Piker also addressed reports of police mistreatment of journalists at the protests, expressing disdain over an Associated Press photographer reportedly being injured.
“They’re doing Israeli occupying force stuff. It’s disgusting,” he commented.
Piker’s critique extends to Democratic lawmakers who have supported immigration enforcement legislation and funding. He emphasized the need for systemic change and urged the election of candidates willing to challenge the status quo.
In his advocacy efforts, Piker has supported candidates endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, including Adam Hamamy in New Jersey. He has also expressed support for billionaire gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer and referenced Mao Zedong during his stream.
The governor’s office did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment. Greg Wehner, a breaking news reporter for Fox News Digital, contributed to the report.
