The Pentagon has unveiled “new, never-before-seen” files concerning U.F.O.s, emphasizing its commitment to transparency. This release comes after reporters were expelled earlier this year. According to a news release, this step is an unparalleled move towards U.A.P. transparency under the current administration. The Defense Department refers to these as unidentified anomalous phenomena (U.A.P.), while they are commonly known as unidentified flying objects (U.F.O.s).
These newly released files are available at war.gov/ufo, with more documents promised to be added continuously. The initial images are indistinct and ambiguous. Some depict clusters of dots, while others show strangely shaped objects.
In 2017, The New York Times reported the existence of a classified Pentagon program, initiated in 2007, that investigated such phenomena based on reports from military personnel. Since then, lawmakers have urged the government to declassify its U.F.O. research. Helene Cooper, who currently serves as a Pentagon correspondent for The Times, has previously worked as an editor, diplomatic correspondent, and White House correspondent.
