A New York Woman’s Health Journey: From Anxiety to Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Discovery

3 weeks ago 0

Jess Potter from Rochester developed a habit of carrying a carbon monoxide detector during her travels. She wanted to guard against health risks she read about, particularly carbon monoxide poisoning in hotels. This habit highlighted her health anxiety, which had been a long-term concern.

A survey by the American Psychiatric Association revealed that, in 2026, 55 percent of over 2,200 U.S. adults felt either ‘very’ or ‘somewhat’ anxious about their health. Potter was one of those people.

Her vigilance about health-related issues led to the discovery of a serious illness. In October 2025, while dealing with recurring sickness over a ‘three-month’ period that she initially dismissed as bronchitis and the winter flu, she visited a doctor as her symptoms persisted.

I had an enlarged lymph node in my neck and bronchitis. After a few biopsies, they determined it was Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Potter was confronted with the reality of her health anxieties when she received the diagnosis. She had to process that what she feared most had become true. Immediately, she began chemotherapy, embarking on the path to recovery.

Reflecting on her journey, Potter sees the irony in her previous concern over carbon monoxide while unknowingly living with cancer. She remarked on her routine caution towards health concerns, missing the critical diagnosis.

Through her experience, Potter hopes to inspire others to remain vigilant about their health. She urges everyone to seek medical advice if they notice anything concerning about their body. Her story underscores the importance of listening to one’s body and addressing health issues proactively.
