The privilege of public service carries the duty to govern within constitutional and legal frameworks. Congressional Republicans, despite their electoral success in 2024, have not met this standard. The upcoming midterm elections provide a pivotal moment for voters to address their shortcomings.
Our government’s checks and balances were established to prevent tyranny. Unfortunately, congressional Republicans have neglected this role. They have acted more like agents of President Trump’s demands, shielding him from necessary oversight. A striking example is the Senate Judiciary Committee’s unanimous decision to advance Trump’s former defense lawyer, Todd Blanche, for U.S. Attorney General. Blanche’s past involvement in dubious dealings, such as creating a slush fund for Trump’s allies and granting legal immunity for Trump’s personal interests, raises concerns. Despite his record, which includes undermining the Department of Justice’s credibility and leading prosecutorial misconduct, Republicans supported his nomination.
Rejecting Blanche would have been a stand against justice disruption, yet it did not happen. His confirmation symbolizes the deep corruption within the Trump administration. Congressional Republicans have continuously failed the populace through their actions.
Notably, the 119th Congress passed the misleading “One Big Beautiful Bill.” This legislation delivered tax breaks to America’s wealthiest, while slashing essential food assistance programs. As a result, over 4.5 million people, including at least 1.5 million children, have lost access to necessary food support. Meanwhile, a friend of Trump exploited a tax provision to purchase an unnecessary private plane, showcasing the skewed priorities.
Republicans further undermined affordable healthcare by eliminating a vital tax credit, prompting millions to forgo health insurance. The combined impact of these budget policies and Trump’s tariffs negatively affects lower-income households, worsening economic inequality.
These actions are reflected in Trump’s declining popularity, with many former supporters losing confidence. Polls indicate a potential shift toward Democrats, driven by progressive candidates advocating for a government that prioritizes public interest over elite advantages.
In response, Trump and his allies seem determined to complicate voting processes, fearing accountability. Recent Supreme Court decisions have emboldened Trump’s disregard for checks on his power. Therefore, it is crucial for the public to demand accountability from both Trump and his congressional supporters.
Mobilizing voters and safeguarding elections against interference are imperative actions. This collective effort will determine our nation’s trajectory toward a more equitable future.
Svante Myrick, president of People For the American Way, underscores the importance of participation in shaping governance.
