Activist’s Health Fuels Education Reform Protests in New Delhi

In New Delhi, police moved a key activist to a hospital after his health declined during a prolonged hunger strike. The strike, lasting 20 days, is part of India’s Cockroach Janta Party movement, which focuses on demanding changes in the education system.

Authorities have increased security at Jantar Mantar, the site designated for public protests. This venue has become a hub for activist Sonam Wangchuk. He, joined by students and other activists, calls for Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation. There are accusations that exam papers were leaked ahead of the tests.

The movement seeks substantial changes in the examination process and demands compensation for families of students who have taken their lives due to leaks or exam outcomes. Sonam Wangchuk, aged 59, is an engineer and proponent of education reform. His hunger strike has united the Cockroach Janta Party. This group formed in response to a Supreme Court comment comparing unemployed youth to “cockroaches.” What began as criticism turned into a popular campaign, quickly gathering over 21 million Instagram followers.

Police confirmed that Wangchuk’s hospitalization followed medical advice and legal orders.

Sachin Sharma, a deputy police commissioner, stated that Wangchuk was moved to a government hospital for necessary medical action under supervision. Supporters of the Cockroach Party claim the government forcibly took Wangchuk without consent. Soon after, Abhijeet Dipke, a Boston University student and party founder, declared he would also hunger strike.

Dipke accused police of using force in Wangchuk’s removal. He alleged that the police treated Wangchuk like a criminal by concealing him in sheets. The Cockroach Party plans to march to India’s Parliament as its sessions commence, reinforcing their resolve.

Police have implemented more security and barriers around Jantar Mantar, noting these measures are preventive and encouraging protester cooperation.
