Gun violence concerns many, including those focused on education and family safety. The recent tragedy at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has raised the importance of discussing this topic with children.
Having worked for over 40 years on school violence, I want to provide some advice for parents on how to discuss school shootings with their kids.
Maintain Composure
It’s crucial to manage your emotions. Children look to adults for cues on how to react. Staying calm helps reassure them.
Model Positive Behavior
Show children how to navigate difficult times. Set an example through your actions and words.
Keep Routines Stable
Sticking to everyday routines provides comfort and a sense of normalcy. This consistency is essential during unsettling times.
Reassure Safety
Let children know they are safe. Reinforce the security measures that are in place in their environment.
Listen and Communicate
Allow children to express their feelings. Listen attentively, and respond with hope, honesty, and kindness.
Offer Age-Appropriate Advice
Tailor your conversations to match your child’s age and development level. Discuss the situation in a way that they can understand.
Incorporate Positive Actions
If suitable, include actions like praying for the victims with your child. It can provide solace and a sense of empathy.
These steps can help parents guide their children through these challenging discussions, providing both comfort and understanding.
