At least two individuals lost their lives when Russian airstrikes hit Kyiv on Tuesday morning, according to city authorities. These attacks followed recent meetings involving President Trump’s envoys in Ukraine and Russia.
The negotiations, led by Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff, came to an end before the resumption of hostilities. Both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had agreed to a temporary halt in fighting to accommodate the talks. This pause, however, concluded with fresh bombardments.
According to TASS, Russia’s state news agency, explosions were detected throughout Kyiv. The city’s administration reported at least two fatalities and seven injuries. Several structures suffered damage, including a five-story apartment building in Solomianskyi district. Vehicles were also impacted in Podilskyi district, and people were reportedly trapped in a residential building, per Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
We’ve had very meaningful discussion, substantive, important, and we’re very encouraged,Witkoff noted following the talks. However, he highlighted that compromises between Russia and Ukraine are essential for peace.
Poland’s air force engaged in “preventive operations” on Tuesday in response to Russia’s missile activity. This action temporarily halted flights from Lublin Airport.
Prior to the resumption of strikes, Trump’s envoys had declared their discussions were “meaningful.” They expressed hope that an agreement could be reached, despite acknowledging challenges in achieving peace.
A senior Ukrainian official mentioned that the talks predominantly focused on strategies for navigating winter and potential actions before then. The official requested to remain anonymous, citing authorization constraints.
Prior to the meeting, President Trump remarked on the proposals being presented by his team. He suggested that there could be a promising resolution to the enduring conflict.
In a follow-up statement, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov recognized the comprehensive preparation by the American delegation. He recognized the proposals presented but did not reveal specifics.
