Republican Candidate Mike Rogers’ Responses to Allegations

Mike Rogers, a Republican Senate candidate, faced scrutiny regarding a past willingness to engage with members of the Muslim Brotherhood. He continued to criticize his Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, for alleged ties to the organization during Michigan’s election campaign.

Appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press, Rogers was asked about President Donald Trump’s accusations against El-Sayed. Host Kristen Welker questioned the evidence supporting these claims and Rogers’ 2012 comments endorsing discussions with some members of the Muslim Brotherhood. Rogers focused on assertions about El-Sayed’s political associations and expressed concerns about the Muslim Brotherhood’s impact on American interests.

Allegations Against Abdul El-Sayed

The intensity of attacks on El-Sayed related to his supposed associations with the Muslim Brotherhood has increased. Trump accused him of supporting the group, which El-Sayed rebuffed, denying any connection and asserting his loyalty to the United States.

The Muslim Brotherhood, established in Egypt in 1928, is viewed differently by various governments. Some categorize branches of the organization as terrorist groups, while others do not.

Several branches of the group have been labeled as terrorist organizations by the U.S. government, including designations made in 2026 affecting branches in Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon. Newsweek reached out to El-Sayed’s campaign for comments on these issues.

Rogers Addressing Trump’s Comments

Welker began her inquiry by referencing Trump’s characterization of El-Sayed and contested the lack of evidence supporting such claims. Rogers, avoiding a direct response, alleged that El-Sayed received financial backing from organizations linked to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Welker reminded Rogers of El-Sayed’s disavowal of any ties to the group and referenced a 2012 letter El-Sayed signed supporting Egyptian protests against former dictator Hosni Mubarak.

Rogers’ Past Comments

Welker questioned Rogers about his own previous statements advocating dialogue with moderate Muslim Brotherhood members. Rogers appeared uneasy and accused Welker of presenting twisted information. In defense, he discussed the need to maintain intelligence cooperation between Israel and Egypt, which he felt the Muslim Brotherhood threatened.

Electoral Debate Focus

Rogers maintained focus on contrasting his national security experience with El-Sayed’s purportedly radical affiliates. He mentioned feedback from varied demographic groups expressing concerns over El-Sayed’s perceived extremity.

This contest has become a significant aspect of Michigan’s Senate election, with Republicans aiming to preserve control of the chamber. Trump has also targeted El-Sayed, and El-Sayed’s supporters criticized these attacks as prejudicial.

El-Sayed’s Campaign Response

El-Sayed responded with humor through a campaign ad that caricatures Rogers’ association with Trump, portraying Rogers as overly agreeable to and dependent on the president.
