Anticipated Northern Lights Due to Solar Activity

In the coming days, you might witness the northern lights, inspired by strong solar activity. This natural phenomenon happens when solar material collides with the atmosphere and interacts with gases.

Recently, the sun released solar particles, prompting the National Weather Service’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) to issue geomagnetic storm watches for Thursday and Friday due to a coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS). On Wednesday, watches were extended to Saturday due to coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the sun. The SWPC anticipates stronger geomagnetic conditions on Friday and Saturday, possibly bringing northern lights to parts of the U.S.

The SWPC forecast indicates geomagnetic conditions strengthening around 5 p.m. EDT Thursday and continuing past sunset, a prime time for aurora viewing since daylight won’t obscure them. It predicts moderate G2 conditions between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. EDT Thursday, potentially enabling northern lights over regions like New York and Idaho.

The aurora forecast Thursday suggests most of Canada and Alaska have the highest chances for viewing. Those close to the Canadian border might see auroras low in the northern sky.

The forecast for Friday matches Thursday’s, with activity possibly ramping up again after midnight EDT. Predictions show strong conditions could appear from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. EDT Friday before weakening.

The SWPC’s forecast through Saturday evening doesn’t clarify if conditions will favor aurora sightings further. While forecasts suggest possible visibility changes, interactions between solar particles and Earth’s atmosphere remain challenging to estimate until they’re near.

If conditions allow auroras, improve your viewing chances by focusing on the northern horizon. If visibility is difficult, consider using your phone’s camera; newer digital cameras capture low-light hues more effectively than the human eye.
