Apple’s $250 Million Settlement Over Delayed AI Features: What iPhone Users Should Know

55 minutes ago 0

Millions of iPhone users eligible for a share of Apple’s $250 million settlement may experience delays before receiving compensation. A federal court has granted preliminary approval, yet several legal steps remain. Payments are not expected for at least another year.

Case Significance

This case impacts an estimated 36 to 37 million Apple customers who bought specific iPhone models. Apple promoted an enhanced Siri and Apple Intelligence platform that were unavailable at launch. While Apple does not admit wrongdoing, this is one of the largest consumer settlements related to AI marketing claims. Increased scrutiny on AI product advertising is evident across the tech industry.

Apple’s $250 Million Payout

The lawsuit claims Apple misled consumers by advertising AI-driven Siri capabilities as central to iPhone 16 and certain iPhone 15 models before these features were ready. Marketing led customers to buy devices based on promised features, which were delayed.

“Roughly 36 million customers are eligible, but the real story isn’t the $25-$95 per device,” commented Michael Ryan, finance expert. “It’s that Apple shipped products on the promise of features that didn’t show up for nearly two years. That’s a fundamental gap between marketing and reality.”

While features like Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence appeared later, advanced Siri functions advertised were missing at purchase. Apple settled the lawsuit in May.

“Apple didn’t promise them for later. The ads showed them as central to why you wanted the new hardware. Then Apple shipped a phone without them,” Ryan said.

Delay in Customer Payments

The settlement has received preliminary approval, but final ruling is pending. Class members must be notified, able to file claims, and given the opportunity to object. Appeals must be resolved before payments are issued, resulting in a likely delay of over a year.

Eligibility and Expected Payouts

The settlement covers U.S. consumers who purchased any iPhone 16 model, iPhone 15 Pro, or iPhone 15 Pro Max between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025. About 36 to 37 million devices might qualify.

Eligible users may receive $25 to $95 per device, based on valid claim numbers and other factors. Exact payout amounts will be clear post claims process.

“As companies race to sell hardware around artificial intelligence, they may face increasing legal and financial consequences if marketing gets too far ahead of what the technology can actually do,” noted Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor.

What Lies Ahead

The settlement awaits final federal court approval for claims distribution. Once approved, eligible customers will get notices on submitting claims. Further appeals or court proceedings may extend distribution timelines.

“For the tech industry broadly, the bigger risk isn’t the $250 million check, it’s the precedent,” said Ryan. “Now there’s a dollar value on overpromising AI capabilities.”
