Pope Leo XIV’s Surgery and Recovery Journey

1 hour ago 0

Pope Leo XIV recently had blood tests and a chest X-ray following surgery to remove a small nodule from his lung. The Vatican has reported that his recovery is progressing as expected. This update follows a calm night at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for the 71-year-old pontiff.

On Tuesday, the Pope underwent thoracic surgery to excise the lower lobe of his right lung. Doctors confirmed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer. Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora issued a statement confirming that the Pope’s recovery is on track, with postoperative test results showing values within the expected range for his surgery.

A photo shows Pope Leo XIV arriving at the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome for the procedure. He has begun engaging in respiratory physiotherapy and walking around his hospital room. Additionally, the Pope has resumed normal eating patterns, having breakfast and lunch, indicating his recovery is proceeding as anticipated.

The confirmation of lung cancer came after a tissue examination during surgery. This was consistent with preoperative test findings.

The Pope spent around three hours in the operating room, though the surgery itself took approximately 90 minutes. Doctors stated the operation was successful without any complications. In a preceding address at St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV shared the discovery of a small lung lump at an early stage, explaining his decision to undergo surgery following medical advice.

Pope Leo expressed gratitude for the spiritual support and prayers from the community, relying on these during his recovery period.
