New Hampshire’s Role in America’s 250th Anniversary

As the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of its independence, the role of Massachusetts colonists in the American Revolution receives widespread attention. However, New Hampshire’s contributions also merit recognition, particularly the Pine Tree Riot. Governor Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire emphasizes this point.

“Before the Boston Tea Party, we had the Pine Tree Riots here in New Hampshire. That’s because the British tried to come in and tax our pine trees and take them for their own, and we said no way,” Ayotte explained.

The Pine Tree Riot is highlighted in New Hampshire’s exhibit at the National Mall during the Great American State Fair. This event stemmed from a British policy that reserved White pine trees larger than 12 inches in diameter for the Royal Navy. This defiance of British control was significant in the colonial resistance narrative.

“We were early joiners of the revolution, very, very proud of this nation,” Ayotte noted. “New Hampshire has a very special role in the history of this country.” She also highlighted that New Hampshire was the ninth state to ratify the Constitution, making it a pivotal player in its establishment. Additionally, it was the first to draft its own state Constitution.

The state’s fair display includes a video of notable New Hampshire figures reading from the Declaration of Independence, showcasing the state’s rich historical past. Governor Ayotte noted the inclusion of New Hampshire maple syrup in the exhibition.

Back in New Hampshire, the state is hosting events at its Statehouse with notable documents like the Dunlap Broadsides, early printings of the Declaration of Independence, and a 1823 William J. Stone engraving of the document on view.

New Hampshire has a long tradition of celebrating July 4th. Cities and towns hold parades, fairs, and fireworks. Governor Ayotte, seeking re-election, plans to participate in four Independence Day parades on July 3 and 4.
