Former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski recently shared insights into how quarterback Drake Maye could enhance his performance in the upcoming NFL season. The Patriots made notable changes by releasing veteran receiver Stefon Diggs after their Super Bowl LXI loss and signing former Philadelphia Eagles’ Pro Bowl receiver AJ Brown. This move provides Maye with a top-tier offensive weapon, who Gronkowski believes could significantly improve Maye’s gameplay.
Gronkowski praised Brown, saying, “He’s a player that reminds me of myself, but in the wide receiver spot. A bigger body who knows how to utilize his physical presence, he can get open even when covered.” He emphasized that this addition marks a significant transition for Maye, who hasn’t previously worked with a player like Brown. Gronkowski cited the potential impact on Maye’s game, suggesting it could mirror his dynamic with Tom Brady, who often threw to Gronkowski even when he was covered.
“This could elevate Drake Maye to another level, and that’s exciting,” Gronkowski said. “It’s about seeing if Maye can hit those targets with Brown when defensive coverage is tight.”
Drake Maye had an impressive sophomore season, amassing 4,394 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions. He topped the league with a QBR of 77.1 and a passer rating of 113.5. Meanwhile, AJ Brown joins the Patriots after a more tumultuous season with the Eagles, where he still delivered strong numbers, recording 1,003 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. The move to New England presents Brown an opportunity for renewed success with Maye, under familiar leadership. He reunites with former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel and plays under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniel, who Gronkowski believes will best maximize Brown’s capabilities.
The Patriots face a challenging AFC lineup, including the likes of Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills, Lamar Jackson with the Baltimore Ravens, and Patrick Mahomes heading the Kansas City Chiefs. However, if Maye and Brown form a formidable duo, the Patriots could become even more competitive than they were in their previous season.
