In Wiener Neustadt, Austria, a 21-year-old man was convicted by an Austrian court for planning an attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna almost two years ago. He received a 15-year prison sentence. Known as Beran A. under Austrian privacy laws, the defendant faced various charges related to the concert plot, as reported by the Austria Press Agency.

His lawyer confirmed that he admitted to the concert-related charges at the start of the trial last month. Even though the plot to attack was thwarted, Austrian authorities decided to cancel three of Swift’s performances scheduled for August 2024 in Vienna.

Before the court deliberated on the verdict, Beran A. offered a short apology, saying, “I would just like to say that I am sorry.” As he was escorted into the courtroom, Beran A. attempted to shield his face using a folder.

The defendant’s alleged plan involved targeting concertgoers with knives or improvised explosives outside the Ernst Happel Stadium. Fans of the American singer, referred to as Swifties, had flocked to Austria to attend her immensely popular Eras Tour. After the cancellations, many fans gathered in Vienna to exchange friendship bracelets and express their disappointment.

Beran A. was also accused of interacting with Islamic State group members prior to the planned attack. Prosecutors revealed discussions about acquiring weapons and fabricating bombs. The defendant reportedly tried purchasing weapons illegally in the days leading up to the performance and swore allegiance to the group.

Authorities searched his apartment on August 7, 2024, where they discovered materials for making bombs. The concerts were due to start the next day. Taylor Swift later addressed the situation in a statement on Instagram, expressing her devastation and guilt over the cancellations that affected many fans.

Alongside Beran A., another 21-year-old, referred to as Arda K., was tried, with both facing additional charges. A third man, Hasan E., currently detained in Saudi Arabia, was allegedly involved in planning attacks in multiple countries during Ramadan 2024, in support of ISIS.

Beran A. faced charges only related to the concert plot. However, both defendants were found guilty of further offenses, including traveling and training for terrorism and being part of a terrorist organization, as reported by the Austria Press Agency. They also faced charges related to attempted murder due to Hasan E.’s alleged actions in Mecca, where he reportedly stabbed a security officer and injured others in March 2024.
