Basketball Icons Parker and Delle Donne Celebrate Hall of Fame Induction

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Icons of women’s basketball, Candace Parker and Elena Delle Donne, expressed gratitude to basketball in their Hall of Fame speeches. Both athletes were enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame over the weekend, reflecting on their careers and contributions to the sport.

Parker brought a basketball to accompany her during the speech, representing her career milestones. She acknowledged her accomplishments that include three WNBA titles with different teams, two MVP awards, and significant moments like her Olympic gold medals and being the first woman on the cover of NBA2K.

“It felt weird to walk on the stage without the reason I’m here today,” Parker said, addressing the basketball. “We did a lot together: dunk on UConn at UConn, shimmied over our right shoulder and hit that fadeaway, had our signature shoe. We stand on this podium as first-ballot Hall of Famers.”

Elena Delle Donne shared her journey, highlighting the influence of her sister Lizzie, who inspired her through personal trials. Delle Donne’s achievements include two MVP awards and leading the Washington Mystics to a WNBA championship. She emphasized how her sister’s strength kept her grounded and motivated.

“She never played in front of thousands, but I’ve never met anyone stronger,” Delle Donne said, emotionally addressing the audience. “Thank you all for keeping me going.”

Other inductees included NBA influence such as Doc Rivers, who spoke about his brother Grady’s influence on his career, and Chamique Holdsclaw, who expressed gratitude for her coach, Pat Summitt. Holdsclaw was instrumental in Tennessee’s three consecutive titles and had a successful 11-year WNBA career.

Veteran coach Mark Few reminisced on his journey from a small town to coaching Gonzaga, leading them to the NCAA Tournament every year since 1999. Referee Joey Crawford reflected on officiating more than 2,500 NBA games, highlighting his lifelong dream and achievements.

Mike D’Antoni and Amar’e Stoudemire were also celebrated for their contributions to basketball, particularly with their innovative playstyle at the Phoenix Suns. These inductees stood together, recognizing their achievements and the sport that shaped their lives.

The ceremonies and speeches were a depiction of respect, perseverance, and love for basketball. Each inductee brought a unique story, highlighting personal growth and professional success.
