Rick Adelman, a Basketball Hall of Fame inductee known for his incredible coaching record in the NBA, has passed away at the age of 79, as announced by the National Basketball Coaches Association. He played in the NBA for seven seasons before becoming one of the most successful coaches in the league’s history.

The Denver Nuggets, where his son David Adelman currently coaches, expressed their condolences. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Hall of Fame Head Coach Rick Adelman,” the team stated. “Our thoughts are with head coach David Adelman, the Adelman family, and everyone fortunate to know Rick.”

Throughout his coaching career, Adelman won 1,042 games, ranking him 10th in league history. Only Pat Riley, Gregg Popovich, Jerry Sloan, and George Karl surpassed his win rate while coaching more games. He led the Portland Trail Blazers to the NBA Finals twice and coached teams in Sacramento, Houston, Minnesota, and Golden State.

The coaches’ association remembered Adelman not only as a coach and player but also as a mentor within the basketball community. He received the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023. Indiana coach Rick Carlisle described Adelman’s coaching career as marked by innovation, integrity, and excellence. Carlisle praised Adelman’s ability to help players thrive through subtle reinventions of the game.

Rick Adelman played in the NBA from 1969 to 1975 as a point guard for five different teams, but his true impact came as a coach. The Sacramento Kings paid tribute, highlighting his humility, integrity, kindness, and belief in teamwork.

Adelman’s journey to NBA coaching was unexpected. Initially, he aimed to be a high school coach, but lacked experience. His coaching career began at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon. “We had great success there,” he noted during his Hall of Fame enshrinement speech.

Jack Ramsey, who coached the Portland Trail Blazers, noticed Adelman’s work and invited him for an interview when a position opened on his staff. Adelman worked under Ramsey for three seasons and with Mike Schuler for 2.5 more before taking over as interim coach in the 1988-89 season.

Adelman successfully led a talented Blazers team to 59 wins in the 1989-90 season, reaching the NBA Finals. He repeated the feat two years later. After Portland, Adelman’s coaching career extended to Golden State and then Sacramento, where he achieved eight consecutive winning seasons.

During his tenure with the Kings, he was credited with innovative offensive strategies. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver acknowledged Adelman as a brilliant strategist and outstanding individual.

Adelman had 210 players appear in games under his guidance. Kyle Lowry, a longtime NBA guard, shared how Adelman trusted and challenged him, contributing to his growth in the league. “It’s a sad day,” Lowry remarked on the news of Adelman’s passing.

One of Adelman’s notable achievements was steering the Houston Rockets through a 22-game winning streak in 2008, the fourth-longest in NBA history. The Rockets lauded his professionalism and deep commitment to the game.

The Portland Trail Blazers acknowledged Adelman’s dual legacy as a player and coach. “Rick was one of the most influential figures in franchise history,” they stated.
