Prince Harry and Meghan’s Royal Status Clarified by King Charles III

Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, continue to be non-working members of the British royal family. King Charles III confirmed this status during the couple’s recent visit to the United Kingdom. The couple will not use their royal titles for official duties, maintaining the approach adopted since their 2020 decision to step back from royal responsibilities.

A letter issued by the Lord Chamberlain on behalf of the king stated that any charitable work undertaken by the couple will be done privately. It also emphasized that decisions regarding their operational security fall under the purview of relevant police agencies. This communication was sent to senior government and military officials, as well as the king’s personal representatives across the country.

“To help avoid doubt or confusion, The King has directed that this information be shared,” the letter explained.

The public release of this letter addresses concerns among palace observers. Some believe that Harry and Meghan’s ongoing non-working status could potentially lead to them forming a parallel royal presence, competing with active members of the royal family.

The security issue remains sensitive. Harry has been in an ongoing dispute with the government over the cancellation of his publicly funded police protection, a change made when he relinquished active royal duties. A government panel, the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC), is responsible for deciding whether to restore police protection for the couple.

“Any specific questions from official and state organizations about the courtesies which should be extended to the Duke and Duchess, and particularly where public funds may be involved, should be directed to Buckingham Palace,” the Lord Chamberlain noted in the letter.
