Beluga Whales Move to New Homes in the U.S. After Canadian Park Closure

On July 22, 2026, two beluga whales, Bertie Bott and Frankie, arrived at their new location in Texas, settling into a 2-million-gallon saltwater pool at SeaWorld San Antonio. This move was part of an international relocation effort following the closure of Marineland, a theme park in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The journey covered over 1,500 miles, bringing these whales and four others headed to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.

This relocation mission has been in planning for nearly two years, involving coordination across various countries. In total, 28 whales are expected to find new homes in aquariums throughout the United States. Steve Aible, vice president of zoological operations at SeaWorld San Antonio, expressed joy about the successful transition. He remarked on the once-in-a-lifetime experience of flying alongside these majestic creatures. A team of caretakers and veterinary specialists were present throughout the journey to ensure the whales’ health and safety.

Marineland, which closed to the public in 2024, retained the animals due to a lack of resources for proper care. Given the situation, the park stated that euthanasia would be necessary if relocation or additional funding was not arranged. Capture of the closed park entry on November 13, 2025, highlighted the urgency of the situation.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration approved the relocation in July, affirming the need for medical care and facilities unavailable in Canada. Bertie and Frankie are now thriving, showing engaging and energetic behaviors. As Aible noted, SeaWorld promises a more dynamic environment compared to the inactive Marineland.

Continuous health checkups will be conducted before the whales join the existing belugas at SeaWorld. Eleven more whales from Marineland are expected to arrive at SeaWorld San Antonio, while additional whales will be sent to aquariums in Georgia, Chicago, San Diego, and even Spain.
