Blainey Dowling’s Chicago Return: Facing Challenges With Optimism

Blainey Dowling of St. Xavier experienced a tough return to Chicago football after four years. His team suffered a 42-point defeat amid challenging weather conditions. Despite this, Dowling called the experience a blessing.

Dowling graduated from Mount Carmel and previously dealt with significant setbacks during his career at Eastern Illinois. He faced two elbow surgeries and two medical opinions suggesting retirement. Initially, he thought retiring was best, but his transfer to St. Xavier marked a positive turn. “It’s been a blessing every day,” Dowling shared.

Saturday’s game saw Dowling throw for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Despite this effort, St. Xavier faced a 59-17 loss against Indiana Wesleyan in a Mid-States Football Association crossover match at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field. Freshman receiver Coen Demack made an impact with five receptions for 81 yards, including a 56-yard touchdown that contributed to St. Xavier’s 17-7 lead. Senior defensive back Owen Schickel, also a Mount Carmel alum, achieved 14 tackles, including 10 solo stops, and forced two fumbles.

Indiana Wesleyan, ranked sixth, was led by Arjun Lothe, who threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns. Ryan Whitwell of Batavia excelled with 243 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 27 attempts. Blake Brumbaugh had a remarkable day with three catches accumulating 170 yards and three scores.

Playing in front of family for the first time since 2022, Dowling reflected on past achievements, including leading the Caravan to multiple state championships and earning the Daily Southtown’s player of the year title. “I give thanks to the Lord for getting me out here and letting me play,” Dowling expressed. “It’s been forever since I’ve played here. My siblings were excited to watch me.”

Dowling made a strong debut on the NAIA scene, throwing for 449 yards and four touchdowns on September 5 during a close loss to Taylor University, earning MSFA Midwest League Offensive Player of the Week honors. Coach Mike Feminis highlighted Dowling’s contributions. “He’s already done some great things for us,” Feminis said. Dowling’s ability to perform despite years of inactivity impressed Feminis, who anticipates continued growth.

Demack, a Bishop McNamara graduate, emerged as a preferred target with 27 catches for 352 yards and four touchdowns. He praised Dowling’s winning mentality, noting his passion and determination during losses.

Feminis embraced challenging games before tackling the MSFA Midwest season. Aside from facing Taylor, St. Xavier’s losses included a significant defeat to Wisconsin-Whitewater, ranked 12th in NCAA Division III. Dowling acknowledged these challenges, stating the need for team improvement.

As a communications major, Dowling dreams of opening a training facility. He hopes to inspire young athletes by sharing his experiences, stressing resilience and perseverance through adversity.
