The U.S. Coast Guard reported that a boat operator is facing criminal charges after a tragic accident in New York Harbor resulted in the deaths of a mother and her infant daughter. Authorities are investigating whether the vessel was an illegal charter.
The incident involved a 22-foot Bayliner speedboat, which overturned near Liberty Island, home of the Statue of Liberty, at approximately 10:25 p.m. Saturday. Emergency responders rescued twelve people from the water before police divers found the 27-year-old woman and 5-month-old girl, who were later pronounced dead at a hospital. The other survivors were reported to be in stable condition.
Captain Doreen McCarthy, the Coast Guard Sector New York Commander, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and extended condolences to the victims’ family and loved ones. She acknowledged the swift actions of partner agencies and Good Samaritans who assisted in the rescue efforts.
Manuel Hernandez, 46, of New York, has been charged with 13 counts of reckless endangerment in relation to the incident. His phone number was not available, and the case has not appeared in online court records as of Sunday. The identities of the victims are being withheld until family notifications are completed.
