The incident began with Carrington’s foul on Cunningham during a Chicago Sky vs. Indiana Fever game on August 8. Following her ejection after a video review ruled it a Flagrant 2 foul, Carrington took to Instagram Threads. She posted “WHITE PRIVILEGE,” suggesting that race played a role in her ejection—an unprecedented action in the WNBA context.

Esiason, on his WFAN show ‘Boomer and Gio,’ discussed the fallout with co-host Gregg Giannotti. He questioned Carrington’s choice to post about white privilege, asking, “How is everybody supposed to react? What are the opinions we are all supposed to have when you do something that foolish?” He described the post as a “targeted attack,” a view Giannotti and others seem to share.

Cunningham has faced criticism due to her stance on trans athletes in sports. After appearing in an ESPN piece, she received negative feedback for her views. Cunningham clarified her position, emphasizing truth and protecting girls in sports, although acknowledging she understands perspectives from both sides.

A March 2025 New York Times poll revealed that 79% of Americans think men should not compete in women’s sports, illustrating the broader conversation Cunningham has been a part of.

Despite the controversy, Carrington played for the Sky against the Seattle Storm on Monday, scoring 26 points in the 97-88 defeat. The WNBA has not officially commented on Carrington’s actions or her social media post.
