56 minutes ago 0

British prosecutors have charged a 28-year-old man with terrorism-related offenses following the murder of a conservative politician. The Crown Prosecution Service has accused Joshua Kerry of South Yorkshire of preparing acts of terrorism, including targeting Reform UK leader Nigel Farage MP.

Kerry, in custody since July, was arrested for the murder of former Reform UK and Conservative politician Ann Widdecombe. Reports state Widdecombe was attacked while having lunch at her Devon home on July 8, beaten with a hammer, and robbed. Authorities say the latest charges against Kerry relate to activities between May 31 and July 8.

“The charge announced today is a result of the tireless work of investigators across the Counterterrorism Policing network,” stated Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, Senior National Coordinator for Counterterrorism Policing. Evans credited a team of detectives, analysts, and forensic experts for the development.

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood expressed concern over the charges against Kerry, posting on social media about the profound impact on Nigel Farage’s family. She voiced worries about the safety of public figures and called for heightened security.

The Jo Cox Foundation, named for the Labour MP murdered in 2016, stressed the importance of safety for those in public life. The organization condemned violence, abuse, and intimidation, which threaten democracy.

Kerry is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. On the same day, charges were announced against two Iranian men accused of plotting attacks on the Jewish community in Manchester. Salam Ahmadyan and Rahman Salehi were charged with preparation for terrorist acts, tied to contact with a potential overseas third party in Iran.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Evans clarified that the charges were considered extremely serious, emphasizing that no ongoing threat to the public was believed to exist in connection to this case.

The charges coincide with the High Holy Day period and the anniversary of a previous attack on a synagogue in Heaton Park. Evans noted a context of rising anti-Semitic incidents in the UK. Ahmadyan and Salehi are scheduled for a court appearance on Saturday.
