Bryson DeChambeau Faces Criticism Amid Major Tournament Challenges

Bryson DeChambeau’s ascent in golf was highlighted by winning the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst. He topped Rory McIlroy with a decisive bunker shot on the final hole, securing his second U.S. Open title. However, his record in major tournaments since then has been inconsistent.

In 2025, DeChambeau placed fifth at The Masters and second at the PGA Championship but then missed the cut at the U.S. Open at Oakmont. He bounced back with a top-ten finish at The Open at Royal Portrush. Missing the cut as the defending U.S. Open champion was a notable setback. The following year, in 2026, his performance raised further concern.

Despite being a skilled player, DeChambeau missed cuts at Augusta, Aronimink, and Shinnecock. His missed cut at the U.S. Open left him, along with players like Viktor Hovland and Patrick Reed, just outside the cutline. For DeChambeau, such results fall short of expectations.

With only one major tournament left, he has a final chance to restore his reputation. Yet, leading golf commentators express doubts about his ability to succeed. Golf legend Nick Faldo remarked, “I’d say it to his face — DeChambeau has zero clue of strategy.” Faldo criticized his approach to links courses, emphasizing the need for precision.

DeChambeau’s focus on YouTube content has also drawn attention. Brandel Chamblee commented, “It’s almost like he went from chasing top golfers to chasing YouTubers like Grant Horvat.” Horvat is a popular figure in YouTube Golf, known for collaboration videos with DeChambeau.

The criticism stems in part from DeChambeau’s choice to join LIV, a tour with different exposure compared to the PGA Tour. His unique approach to golf, such as using 3D-printed irons and unconventional techniques, also deviates from traditional norms. Despite these differences, his past achievements, including three top-10 finishes in majors in one season, show his capability.

While DeChambeau hasn’t been at his peak this year, finishing tenth at Royal Portrush shows potential. Injuries have also played a role in his recent struggles. Although facing critique, he has the opportunity to prove himself in the upcoming major tournament.
