The 2026 WNBA season has presented its challenges for both the Indiana Fever and Caitlin Clark. Following an injury-plagued 2025, the anticipation for Clark’s performance this season was high. Initially, she impressed with strong showings, scoring over 20 points in five consecutive games. However, her form soon became inconsistent.
Clark’s highlight performance was against the Golden State Valkyries, where she scored 22 points, delivered nine assists, and shot 44% from beyond the arc. Despite these numbers, she struggled to build consistent momentum. In a rematch with the Valkyries, she recorded five turnovers, followed by a mere six points against the Portland Fire on May 30.
Clark’s performance against the Fire was a clear indication of the challenges she faced, scoring just six points in a significant defeat.
In a subsequent game against the New York Liberty, Clark contributed 10 points with three turnovers and five fouls. Nonetheless, she demonstrated her ability by adding nine assists and grabbing seven rebounds.
Going into the game against the Washington Mystics, the Fever held a 5-5 record, and Clark’s recent shooting stats were concerning. She was 14 for 50 from the floor and 6 of 22 on three-pointers. However, Monday night offered a pivotal chance for recovery.
Clark began strong with 10 points in the opening quarter, including two successful three-pointers. Although she spent much of the second quarter on the bench, she made an incredible pass to Myisha Hines-Allen for a layup, underscoring her versatility.
The second half allowed for more of Clark’s characteristic shooting skill. Early in the third quarter, she executed an impressive 25-foot jump shot despite interference from Cassandre Prosper. This sequence culminated in a four-point play for Clark.
Despite the Fever securing a significant lead, the Mystics reduced the gap by the fourth quarter. A loose ball foul shifted the lead momentarily to the Mystics. Clark’s missed free throws added tension, but she soon redeemed herself with a crucial half-court pass that helped secure a narrow lead for the Fever.
The game’s climactic moment came when Sophie Cunningham’s long pass found Clark, who scored a 31-footer to seal the victory, bringing the final score to 78-76 for the Fever.
Monday’s game reflected a closer return to Clark’s best form. She recorded 19 points on 7-16 shooting, four of which were from three-point range. Additionally, she provided five assists and made a steal, culminating her performance with the spectacular game-winning shot.
Following this win, the Fever improved their standing to 6-5, setting up their next matchup against the Chicago Sky.
