The Chicago Bears are anxiously awaiting updates on quarterback Caleb Williams after he sustained an injury during a game against the Minnesota Vikings. Williams had to leave the field with assistance from two trainers who supported him as he limped.
Once he reached the sidelines, medical personnel took Williams to the team’s tent, followed by a trip to the locker room for further evaluation. The Bears confirmed that he injured his right hamstring while attempting to avoid a tackle from Vikings linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel. Williams expressed pain on the field until he received help.
The team announced Williams suffered from a hamstring injury. He did not return to the game against the Vikings. Before leaving the field, Williams acknowledged the crowd at Soldier Field with a thumbs-up.
The extent of the injury will likely not be known until an MRI can assess the severity. “We’ll know tomorrow,” said Bears coach Ben Johnson. The concern is whether the hamstring is simply strained or torn. Recovery time varies significantly. A tear could mean 3–6 months of recovery, while a strain might require just 1–3 weeks.
Backup quarterback Tyson Bagent filled in after Williams left the match. The Bears subsequently lost the game, leaving a season that started with high expectations uncertain.
Williams is in his third NFL season, impressing in 2025 under first-year coach Ben Johnson. He led the Bears to an 11–6 record, helped secure the NFC North title, and achieved their first playoff appearance since 2020. Williams set a franchise record with 3,942 passing yards and 31 total touchdowns.
In the 2026 season opener, Williams demonstrated continued skill, completing 21 of 29 passes for 269 yards with two touchdowns. He also rushed for 65 yards and scored twice more in Chicago’s 59-37 win over Carolina.
“I’m relieved it’s not a knee issue,” Johnson mentioned. “That was my initial worry. But, yes, a hamstring injury can be serious as well. Tomorrow will tell us more.”
