Becerra Highlights Trump Ties

Democrat Xavier Becerra associated his Republican opponent, Steve Hilton, with former President Trump during his speech. He chose not to name Hilton or Trump directly but criticized the former president as a “false” prophet. Becerra referred to the ongoing U.S. military actions in Iran and the rising gas prices as examples of misleading promises by such “prophets.”

Becerra stated that California would not accept “their disciples,” suggesting his preference for policies different from those associated with Trump.

Hilton Focuses on Immigration and Business

Stephen Hilton, on the other hand, emphasized his immigrant background and business experience. Acknowledging Trump’s endorsement, Hilton talked about his family’s journey from Hungary to Britain and then his own move to California in 2012. Becerra took a light jab at Hilton over an earlier incident where Hilton filmed himself eating a Del Taco item, labeling it a “street taco.” Becerra humorously clarified to the audience that authentic street tacos come from traditional vendors, not established restaurant chains.

Hilton retorted to Becerra’s remarks, focusing on practical issues such as gas prices and housing costs. He suggested that more practical change was necessary, rather than what he described as the entrenched political approach of his opponent.

The conference also featured speeches from prominent Democrats like Gov. Gavin Newsom and U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla. Discussions included the recent incidents involving immigrants and security forces, highlighting the broader political climate affecting the voters in California.
