New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill and Senator Andy Kim met with families at Delaney Hall, a migrant detention facility facing criticism. Critics call for its closure due to “unacceptable” conditions and a hunger strike.
Both Democrats sought access to the Newark facility where many immigrants are held. ‘I’m back at Delaney Hall with @GovSherrillNJ and other NJ delegation members to meet with detainees’ families and advocates,’ Kim wrote. ‘We aim to ensure they’re heard.’ He advocated for immediate closure.
A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson noted Kim’s call to Secretary Markwayne Mullin. Kim visited Delaney Hall to fulfill congressional duties. The spokesperson criticized Sherrill’s visit, calling it a political maneuver during a period of visitation suspension due to protester riots outside.
Democrats demand the facility’s closure amidst allegations of poor conditions. Sherrill expressed concern and opposition to private detention facilities. ‘I will continue to push for closure due to these reports,’ she stated.
Kim and Rep. Rob Menendez were denied entry recently. Critics argue detainees face squalid conditions and mistreatment from staff. The ACLU of New Jersey labeled Delaney Hall as “dangerous” for detainees and their advocates.
DHS asserts detainees receive three meals daily, clean water, and basic amenities. ‘ICE detention standards surpass those of many U.S. prisons,’ DHS stated, claiming to provide comprehensive healthcare. They noted that many immigrants may experience superior healthcare compared to previous experiences.
Protests occur regularly outside Delaney Hall. In 2025, protesters clashed with authorities. U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver faces federal charges related to allegations of hindering law enforcement officers.
Former DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin labeled some detainees at Delaney Hall as “serious criminals” while questioning lawmakers’ support.
