The devastating flash floods and mudslides in Nepal have significantly impacted the region. As of Saturday, the death toll has risen to at least 626, with over 2,400 individuals still missing. Among the missing, around 90 are American citizens. Rescue operations are severely challenged due to damaged infrastructure and fears of further flooding.

Rescue Challenges and International Impact

Rescue teams face difficulty reaching affected communities along the Nepal-Tibet border. Damaged roads, power outages, and continuing threats of flooding are major obstacles. China’s Tibet region also reports seven deaths and 554 missing individuals, including numerous foreigners. The overlap between the missing counts in China and Nepal remains uncertain.

The disaster unfolded last Wednesday when a massive chunk of ice and rock, significantly larger than the Empire State Building, broke off a mountaintop. Geologists confirmed this triggered the flooding.

Witness Accounts and Missing Persons

Video footage shows the debris flow engulfing towns, buildings, and vehicles, cutting off roads, power, and communication. The glacier collapse was so severe it registered as a magnitude-4.4 earthquake on seismic monitors.

The U.S. State Department has not reported confirmed American fatalities, but the high number of U.S. citizens unaccounted for raises concern. Among the missing are Raghu Rajan and Archana Suresh from Murphy, Texas. The pair disappeared after their phones last pinged near a washed-away bridge. Additionally, Deepak and Madhu Ahuja from Plano, Texas, who were on a religious pilgrimage, are also missing.

Current Rescue Efforts and Aid

With weather improving, helicopters resumed rescue operations in Nepal’s Nuwakot district, carrying both aid and rescued individuals, including several babies. Bodies recovered along the Trishuli and Narayani rivers are being identified in Pokhara’s Western Regional Hospital, despite decomposition challenges.

Rescuers are working tirelessly amidst tough conditions. Led by global support, including pledges from the World Bank, India, China, and the U.S., more than $229 million has been committed for support. The U.N. contributes an additional $2 million for immediate relief. Estimates for reconstruction expenses are between $4 billion to $5 billion according to Nepal’s finance minister.
