Boston Celtics fans expressed outrage after learning that five-time All-Star and 2024 NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown had been traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. In exchange, the Celtics acquired former All-Star Paul George, along with first-round picks in 2028 and 2031, and second-round picks in 2028 and 2030.
Many fans were disappointed with these trade details. Former Celtics player Kendrick Perkins criticized it, calling it ‘one of the dumbest trades in NBA history.’ He stated on ESPN’s ‘SportsCenter,’ ‘First of all, this is a sad day for the Boston Celtics, and as a former Celtic, I do not approve. If you’re gonna trade a guy that’s a top 10 player, you at least have to get back a guy that’s a top 15, top 20 player, and Paul George is not that. Paul George hasn’t been consistently good, since I was skinny, and that’s been a long time.’ Perkins described the trade as ‘nothing but sloppy seconds.’
Perkins believes the Celtics’ GM Brad Stevens ‘handed the 76ers a trip to the NBA Finals next year’ by trading Brown to them. Brown will now play alongside All-Stars Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, and young talent VJ Edgecombe. The 76ers recently eliminated the Celtics from the NBA Playoffs in a seven-game first-round series.
Paul George, a nine-time All-Star last seen in the All-Star game in 2024, joins the Celtics. Though he was an All-NBA First Team member in 2019 and a two-time All-Defensive Team selection, he is now 36, and his performance has been inconsistent. Last season with the 76ers, George averaged 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game, with a 43.9% field-goal percentage. These statistics do not present a strong case as inspiring.
George did perform well in the playoffs against the Celtics, scoring 16 points with nine rebounds and seven assists in Game 5, and delivering a 23-point performance in Game 6, which the 76ers won.
The upcoming season may determine the true victor of this trade as both teams adapt to their new rosters.
