Edward Cabrera Joins the Cubs
The Chicago Cubs had long admired Edward Cabrera before securing the right-hander in a trade with the Miami Marlins. Cabrera’s debut season has yet to realize the full potential the Cubs see in him. Entering a recent game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Cabrera held a 4.06 ERA and a 94 ERA+ but was forced to leave due to a blister on his pitching hand.
Disappointing Exit and Team Struggles
Cabrera’s exit marked one of several disappointing moments in a 5-0 loss to the Brewers, where the Cubs suffered their first season sweep. Manager Craig Counsell emphasized the team’s need for improvement, stating, “We’re in a funk right now, and it’s up to us to change it.” Cabrera’s injury history with blisters continued, having previously missed games during his tenure with the Marlins due to a similar issue.
Recent Game Struggles
Nico Hoerner’s attempt to stretch a single into a triple ended in an overturned call at third base. The Cubs showcased more errors than hits, including a critical mistake by Pete Crow-Armstrong, which resulted in multiple runs scored by the Brewers. Crow-Armstrong reflected on overcoming recent challenges and the support of teammates, “I’ve had really nice people to lean on during my tough times up here, but again you can only have so many conversations and lean on so many people for so many different things that it’s up to me to turn this around.”
Cabrera’s Importance and Challenges
With key starters injured, Cabrera’s quick recovery from injury is crucial for the Cubs. His performance began strong but recently declined, displaying a 5.26 ERA over seven starts. Pitching coach Tommy Hottovy noted concerns regarding Cabrera’s delivery and velocity, raising the need for improvements in his techniques.
Change in Pitching Strategy
A key to Cabrera’s success, his changeup remains a valuable tool against opposing teams. Despite efforts to develop his fastball, small improvements have been noted, contributing to reduced hard contact and increased strikeouts. Hottovy explained, “For me, though, it’s simplifying things for him and what a good quality recipe is for him to have success.”
Moving Forward
Cabrera is encouraged to consider how his pitches complement one another, allowing for strategic combinations without over-reliance on one pitch. Hottovy emphasizes adjusting to teams’ tactics and maximizing Cabrera’s effectiveness as the Cubs work through rotation injuries, “It’s just talking him through that…how do we adjust and how do we attack?”
Though he faces hurdles, Cabrera possesses promising potential. The Cubs remain optimistic about in-season improvements that could elevate him as a leading starter. Counsell articulated an expectation for Cabrera’s growth, “It’s really just about getting those outs and making pitches every single pitch and moving on to the next pitch.”
