Charlie Larson, a senior at Metea Valley, puts his team first. His willingness to adapt is notable, especially as he moves from quarterback to wide receiver. Despite yielding his main position, Larson consistently prioritizes team success.

Former Star Quarterback

As a junior, Larson was the Mustangs’ quarterback. His stats were impressive, with 1,520 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, and 642 rushing yards complemented by eight scores. He was acknowledged as the offensive MVP. Although Larson was not identified as a star early in his freshman and sophomore years, last season showcased his abilities behind center.

Coach Sheehan’s Perspective

First-year coach Patrick Sheehan recognized Larson’s impact. “Charlie was a warrior last year,” Sheehan remarked. With a newly designed offense focusing on a running quarterback, Larson demonstrated his skills effectively, earning respect from Sheehan. “Charlie is like the soul of our team,” Sheehan remarked.

New Opportunities

Larson already had experience as a safety. Coach Sheehan reallocated his position when junior quarterback Iggy Amorrortu joined the team, allowing Larson to explore the role of a receiver. Despite limited experience in that role, Larson accepted the change quickly. His positive attitude included the acquisition of receiving gloves without hesitation. “He’s a natural athlete,” Sheehan commented.

Larson welcomed transition. “It’s been definitely something new learning everything,” he stated. His ability to adapt was evident as he bonded with Amorrortu. “Since day one, he was very welcoming,” Amorrortu said. The connection between them showed potential in the season opener, where Larson made three receptions for 40 yards.

Defensive Skills

Larson’s defensive abilities continued to shine as he delivered an interception against St. Charles East. The subsequent drive influenced the scoring, culminating in senior kicker Ryan Lozowski’s 22-yard field goal. “I think he played great at wide receiver,” Amorrortu remarked, anticipating improvements as the season progresses.

Larson maintains a passion for football that began with flag football and evolved to tackle football in seventh grade. “I’m confident in myself,” he expressed regarding his dual capabilities for college-level play.

Captain and Leader

His team dynamics involve encouragement and support, promoting positivity among teammates. “I think my role is to just be the good cop, pick everyone up,” he noted regarding his captaincy.

Larson acknowledges the influence of mentors throughout his journey. “I’ve had some really good teachers in my life,” he stated, attributing his strategic understanding to his coaches.
