Chicago White Sox vs Minnesota Twins: Key Moments from Sunday’s Game

3 weeks ago 0

The Chicago White Sox faced a challenging Sunday at Target Field, where they lost 5-1 to the Minnesota Twins. A crowd of 26,225 watched as the White Sox struggled to mount an offense, only managing their first hit in the sixth inning.

Drew Romo’s Key Moment

Drew Romo made a crucial play in the sixth inning, becoming the first base runner with a single against Zebby Matthews. Matthews had retired the first 17 batters, fueling a bid for a perfect game. Romo’s disciplined approach at the plate and strategic hit interrupted that bid.

Drew Romo commented, “I just stuck to my plan and approach and worked a good at-bat and got a good pitch to hit.”

Matthews had an impressive performance, allowing just one run on five hits over 8 1/3 innings, striking out five with no walks. Manager Will Venable praised Matthews’ command and acknowledged the Twins’ strong defensive plays that stifled the White Sox’s offensive efforts.

Impact of Two-Out Plays

The White Sox faced significant challenges from the Twins’ two-out scoring. Jordan Hicks, the starting pitcher for Chicago, walked two batters early. Josh Bell capitalized with a run-scoring single, followed by Trevor Larnach’s two-run double against reliever Tyler Gilbert.

Ryan Jeffers further extended the Twins’ lead with a two-out hit in the third inning. Luke Keaschall added a home run in the seventh, closing out the Twins’ two-out scoring spree. José Urquidy, Chicago’s bulk pitcher, provided a solid performance, allowing one run over five innings while maintaining control after a difficult previous outing.

Division Standings Update

Despite the loss, the White Sox improved their standing in the American League Central Division during the weekend series. They expanded their lead over second-place Cleveland Guardians to 3 1/2 games. The Twins remain third, trailing 7 1/2 games behind.

Will Venable stated, “You come here to win a series, and we won a series… Tough first inning for us on the mound and on defense, but we won the series, so we’ll move on.”

The White Sox now look forward to a significant series against the AL West-leading Houston, aiming to maintain their division lead and bounce back from Sunday’s performance.
