The Chicago White Sox had a strong performance in May, winning 18 games, their best monthly record since May 2021. General manager Chris Getz praised the team’s efforts before the game against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field, noting their impressive series against Minnesota and Detroit.
“It was a quality month,” Getz stated, appreciating the players’ dedication and teamwork. The White Sox managed to win three out of four games against the Twins and swept the Tigers in a three-game series. Their homestand ended with a 2-1 victory over Detroit, noted as the team’s 16th comeback win of the season, which led the American League.
Even the games we were down, they don’t give in. Their response and the support from fans have been incredible.— Chris Getz
The White Sox finished May with a record of 18-10, achieving a .643 winning percentage, second only to the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League, who led with .692. Jacob Gonzalez, the first baseman, made a significant appearance during his at-bat against the Tigers.
The team will continue without first baseman Munetaka Murakami, who suffered a right hamstring strain and is on the 10-day injured list. Getz emphasized the opportunity this presents for Jacob Gonzalez, who has been impressive in Triple-A with 19 home runs in two months.
“Gonzalez had a solid game,” Getz said, “We’re not expecting him to completely replace Murakami, but he’ll be helpful to the team. The belief they can win any game is strong among the players.” Murakami’s recovery might take four to six weeks, though his return timeline remains uncertain.
Getz highlighted the role of the minor-league system in this progress. He credited minor-league managers, coaches, and staff in player development, noting their vital role in enhancing the players’ skills.
Our minor-league managers have done an outstanding job. It’s about trust in our development system, which has been effective.— Chris Getz
Injury reports indicate Austin Hays has been dealing with left calf soreness during his rehab assignment. He first went on the injured list at the beginning of May, attempting a return from a left calf strain.
