OMAHA, Neb. — Deiten Lachance powered Oklahoma to a 9-3 victory in Game 1 of the College World Series finals against North Carolina. Lachance hit two home runs off North Carolina’s pitcher Jason DeCaro, with Oklahoma shutting down the Tar Heels after their early lead.
The Sooners, boasting a 42-22 record, seized control with a four-run outburst in the fourth inning. Cord Rager, along with two relievers, limited North Carolina to just two players reaching second base after their initial runs. North Carolina, holding a 53-12-1 record, must win on Sunday to stay in contention.
Oklahoma aims to secure its third national title, having previously won in 1951 and 1994. Meanwhile, North Carolina seeks its inaugural championship and hopes to force a deciding Game 3.
OU ended DeCaro’s rough outing in the fourth inning, scoring four runs with two outs. Kyle Branch’s two-run single broke the 3-all tie, followed by Jason Walk’s hit bringing Branch home. Camden Johnson extended the lead to 7-3. DeCaro, coming into the game with an impressive 2.31 ERA, was uncharacteristically hit for seven runs.
Lachance’s homers set an early 2-0 lead and tied the game at 3 in the third inning. Known as “Big Maple,” the Canadian has hit 18 home runs in the last 32 games, with six in the past eight. Oklahoma’s power surge totals 45 home runs over their last 17 games, including 28 through 11 NCAA Tournament matches. Their 10 home runs in four CWS games mark the highest since 2011.
Pitcher Cord Rager, who had 15 2/3 shutout innings in prior outings, allowed three runs initially but managed to stabilize. Relievers Gavin Jones and LJ Mercurius closed the game effectively.
One standout defensive play occurred in the third inning when Carolina’s Carter French made a remarkable catch. As Jason Walk hit a deep drive to right, French’s glove momentarily caught on the fence padding, crumpling as the ball landed in. He maintained possession and displayed it to the umpire.
