Chris Rock recently shared his thoughts on Hollywood’s hidden issues, revealing an underlying darkness in Los Angeles that many choose to ignore. In a Variety interview published on Tuesday, the comedian discussed the complexities of fame and how he has witnessed its evolution over time.
Rock, aged 61, noted a change in motivations for coming to Hollywood. He observed that individuals once aspired to be exceptional in their craft, such as acting or singing. Now, the focus has shifted to fame, with greatness often assumed.
L.A. attracts a dark ‘underbelly,’ Rock stated, elucidating its mix of beautiful weather and hidden complications. He pointed out that an underbelly exists in the city, one many overlook.
Rock maintains homes in both New York and Los Angeles, expressing affection for parts of the West Coast city. He humorously mentioned that he “winters” in California, acknowledging the city’s appeal despite its challenges.
The comedian is currently directing an indie film titled Misty Green, focusing on a former actress living in Los Angeles and facing financial struggles. Rock explained the film’s connection to L.A., emphasizing the city’s peculiar priorities. He highlighted a scene illustrating the stark contrast between wealth and poverty, represented by a $30-$40 million real estate office located near homeless individuals.
Reflecting on the 2022 Oscars incident where Will Smith slapped him, Rock expressed his wish for no altercation to have taken place. Rock was presenting when Smith, who later won the best actor award, confronted him over a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith.
“It’s a crazy world,” Rock remarked to Variety, noting that while homelessness and other societal issues persist, his bad day seemed less significant. Rock indicated he would only return to the Oscars if nominated, with no anticipation of future nominations.
