Civil Rights Attorneys Join Pro Bono Legal Team

Civil rights attorneys have joined Karmelo Anthony’s legal team pro bono. They aim to appeal his murder conviction. Project 21 author and co-chair Horace Cooper has voiced concerns. He worries the appeal might fuel racial tensions. Cooper argues the appellate court’s role is to focus on the law, not introduce new evidence.

Stephen A. Smith’s Firm Stance

Stephen A. Smith, a well-known sports commentator, remains steadfast. On his podcast, “Straight Shooter,” he addressed Anthony’s supporters directly. Smith questions why some continue to dispute the verdict.

Anthony was convicted of murder earlier this month. He was sentenced to 35 years for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a high school event. Smith reiterated, “Karmelo Anthony murdered Austin Metcalf.” He expressed skepticism about arguments of self-defense presented during the trial.

Activism and Online Movements

Dominique Alexander, of the Next Generation Action Network, launched “Stand with the Anthony Family.” This initiative aims to provide accurate information and fosters community involvement. Alexander emphasizes combating misinformation and promoting unity.

Addressing Broader Issues

Smith also highlighted other societal issues, such as the surge in violence in Chicago. He compared media attention on Anthony’s case to a lack of focus on broader violence. Smith urges the public to address these pressing issues actively.
