College Football Programs Aiming for Success with New Head Coaches

The coaching changes in college football were significant last year. A total of 33 programs decided to hire new head coaches during the offseason. The influx of money through NIL funding allows teams to act swiftly when coaches are not delivering results. The success of Curt Cignetti, who secured a national championship for Indiana in his second year, increases the expectations for immediate success among coaches.

All 33 programs with fresh leadership are hopeful for improvements as the new season approaches. We examine three programs expected to make substantial progress under new guidance.

1. Florida with Jon Sumrall

Jon Sumrall has rejuvenated Florida’s fanbase. His recruitment strategies are gaining momentum. Sumrall had successful tenures at Troy and Tulane, leading Tulane to the College Football Playoff last season. The Gators parted ways with Billy Napier after a poor 3-4 start and ended with a 4-8 record in 2025. Sumrall’s leadership is expected to double the team’s wins this season, although significant achievements like a College Football Playoff appearance may take until 2027.

2. LSU with Lane Kiffin

LSU hired Lane Kiffin, aiming for stability after Brian Kelly’s stint did not go as planned. Kiffin previously led Ole Miss to the College Football Playoff but moved to LSU before the playoffs. LSU is backing Kiffin with substantial resources to establish a competitive team. While a national championship might not be immediate, the Tigers are likely to contend for the SEC title and a spot in the College Football Playoff.

3. Oklahoma State with Eric Morris

Oklahoma State might be overlooked this offseason after a dismal 1-11 season in 2025. However, new head coach Eric Morris, who led North Texas to an 11-2 record last year, aims for revival. North Texas was close to a College Football Playoff spot but lost to Tulane in the American Conference championship. Oklahoma State boasts an exciting transfer, quarterback Drew Mestemaker, who threw for 4,379 yards and 34 touchdowns last season. The Cowboys are not expected to win the Big 12 this season, but a notable improvement is anticipated.
