Community leaders and organizers have demanded accountability following the fatal shooting of a motorist by an ICE agent in Biddeford, Maine. This incident marks one of two deadly shootings involving ICE within a week, prompting President Donald Trump to express support for continuing traffic stops, despite prior directives to suspend them. Trump highlighted the importance of traffic stops in removing criminals from the country.

Reports indicated that these changes in policy arose after the killing of a Colombian driver in Maine, followed by another incident involving a Mexican motorist in Houston. These events have rekindled criticism of ICE’s tactics, as in both cases, officers claimed they shot drivers who allegedly used their vehicles as weapons. A third death linked to immigration agents occurred when a man was struck by a tractor-trailer in Florida.

U.S. Senator Susan Collins from Maine has urged DHS to halt non-urgent vehicle stops, pointing to a rise in such deadly encounters. John Sandweg, a former acting director at ICE, estimated that there have been around 18 traffic stop shootings during the Trump administration.

Maine Shooting Investigation

In Maine, the absence of body cameras on officers involved in the shooting has left many questions unanswered. These include the officer’s proximity to the vehicle and why ICE believed the driver posed a public threat. The shooting of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a Colombian national authorized to work in the U.S., triggered protests in Maine. DHS stated that the officer acted fearing for public safety.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro criticized the shooting, labeling it a targeted killing.
